The Great Fire of Hamburg (Der Grosse Brand In Hamburg)
During 1842, around a fourth of the inner town was burned in Hamburg’s Great Fire. This fire started up on the night of the 4 May 1842 and was put out on May 8. It wrecked 3 churches, the town hall, and many other buildings, killed 51 individuals, and left an approximated 20,000 homeless.
The Hamburg Dungeon brings its visitors to the centre of the fires ravaging, smoke hangs heavy as a raging inferno reduces Hamburg to ash and rubble, narrow alleyways and wooden homes feed the fire and soon a death trap forms. Visitors have to find their way through the horrific fire as bedlam reigns and panic spreads through Hamburg.
A great list of myths and legends surround the few facts known of Klaus Störtebeker's life. Störtebeker is only a nickname, which stands for "finish with one gulp" in Old German. The alias relates to the pirate's apparant ability to finish a huge mug of ale in 1 swig.
Was Klaus Störtebeker a champion or a wicked pirate? In 1401 the council of Hamburg had no questions. Sentenced alongside his shipmates for offences on the oceans, and with his death imminent, Störtebeker made a strange and scary deal with the people holding him captive, when his head had been chopped off, he would rise up and walk along the line of his sentenced crew, the longer his beheaded torso stumbled along, the more shipmates his captors would free.
The Hamburg Dungeon brings to life the horrific story of Störtebeker as visitors are taken on a mock pirate boat to help battle in a nautical fight before watching the execution of the famed pirate alongside his gang.
Flood of 1717 (Sturmflut – 1717)
Hamburg was once prone to scary flooding, with the biggest example being the Christmas Day of 1717. Visitors are taken on a boat ride to witness the worst flood of the 18th century as a huge tempest cripples Hamburg. Hammering waves and rain whip the raft, local citizens cling on for their lives as the ride takes visitors through the carnage of the town and to safety.
