As well, Asanas can be classified according to the pre-position required to assume a particular position e.g. the shoulder stand asana is achieved from a supine position, therefore, it is classified as a supine asana.
1. Supine position: Lying on the back before progressing to the required position. Asanas such as Sarvangasana (shoulder stand), Halasana (plough position), Chakrasana (wheel position) etc. can only be assumed after lying down on one’s back.
2. Prone position: Asanas like Bhujangasana (cobra position), Shalabhasana (locust position), Noukasana (boat position), Dhanurasana (Bow position) are assumed from a prone position.
3. Sitting position: For assuming Asanas like Padmasana (lotus position), Matsyendrasana (spinal twist position), Paschimottasana (forward bend position), vajrasana (thunderbolt position) etc. one has to sit down first.
4. Standing position - Trikonasana (triangle position), Veerasana (warrior position), Vrikshasana (tree position) etc. can be assumed when one is standing in the upright position.
However, they can be classified in many other ways and according to Gherand Sanhita (a text of Hatha Yoga); in all there are 8.4 millions asanas, though only 32-asanas are described by it. While, Hatha Yoga Pradipika describes 15-asanas, Hatha Ratnavali mentions 34-asanas, Goraksha Sanhita talks about 84-asanas. Hence, the study of asanas can become an intense subject for research and more efforts should be made to do so.
