If you’re trying to increase the traffic to your website, don’t just concentrate on creating as many incoming links as possible; you need to focus more on the quality of the links.
As is the case in most aspects of business, it’s the quality, not the quantity that will give the best results in the end.
You should prefer one-way links to your website from other sites that are related to your niche – the higher the Google Page Rank (PR) the better. The search engines give far greater weight to these types of links and you will be rewarded with higher rankings (and a higher PR for your site). It is always easier to get links from low PR sites, and this is ok when you're first starting out, but you should always try to target the high PR sites.
You are judged by the sites you associate with
It is important to thoroughly check out the site before you try to get it to link to you. Links from sites that contain large numbers of outgoing links should be avoided; otherwise you may be penalized by the search engines for associating with a link farm.
A link farm is a series of websites that all link to each other for the sole purpose of getting higher rankings in the search engines. Most search engines have tweaked their algorithms in order to spot these types of websites - considering this to be a form a spam - and remove them from their listings.
Being associated with a link farm will greatly reduce the amount of traffic you see over time. If Google, or any search engine, decides your site violates their terms of service and bans it from their listings, a significant source of traffic will be lost. You do NOT want this so avoid it at all costs.
What you do want are links from sites the search engines consider to be an authority in your selected niche. You will find these types of links can dramatically increase your rankings in the search results.
The same holds true for government or educational sites related to your niche; links from these sites are considered to be high quality. However, it may not always be practical, or even possible, to get links from these types of sites, especially if your niche doesn’t relate to anything contained on any existing government or educational website.
Switch up your linking strategies
Try not to have all your incoming links display the same anchor text. If you have control over what the link will say, use your main keywords and be sure to switch it up with a variety of phrases. If the search engines see that all your incoming links say the same thing, they may mistake it as spam.
And to expand on this, you should also use a variety of destinations within your website for the links. If you have a content site, have your links point to different pages, not just the home page. Use the links to refer visitors to internal pages of the website. The key here is to make your links look as natural as possible to avoid being flagged as spam.
Don’t’ be in a rush to generate a ton of incoming links. It’s better to generate links slowly and concentrate on the higher quality ones. Creating too many links at one time may send up red flags in the search engines (they might think link generating software is being used). If you’re able to generate several high quality links a week, the search engines will consider your site to be increasing in popularity and your overall ranking will increase, which means much more targeted traffic to your site!
