Toyota is a Japanese carmaker that is known for its world class cars. It has carved a niche for itself in the global car market. One segment of Toyota that looks after the design, marketing and production work of the cars is TRD or Toyota Racing Development. TRD is responsible for the popularity of some of Toyota’s best selling vehicles like Camry, Corolla, MR2 Spyder and Celica. The Toyota Celica is a leading saloon class car that has given competitors like the Honda Prelude a run for their money. It made its debut in Japan in the year 1970. The Celica TRD has played a significant role behind the creation of the Celica.

Though the Celica is manufactured in Japan, the car is assembled in a Toyota plant in California, USA. It has gone through seven generations and each version has received some notable change in design overhaul and implementation of newer technologies. The focus of Celica TRD however has remained constantly on driving pleasure and style quotient. It proved to be a worthy successor to the 2000GT. Different versions of Celica have been manufactured. While some of them were meant for in country use, the rest was for Export sales.

The Celica TRD was responsible for the widespread popularity of the first generation GT and Liftback models. The second version of the Celica ST and GT came with enhanced safety and engine power. They were also more economical. The second incarnation went on to win the best 'Import Car of the Year' awarded by Motor Trend. It was equally popular in its homeland. The third version of the car came with a new 2.4 liter engine and showed a major shift in styling. The next version of the Celica cars were aimed to bring back the sporty image their predecessors lost because of big dimensions. The Celica TRD made alterations in wheels and suspension areas and also in Celica TRD Exhaust systems. The fifth incarnation of the Celica came in 1990. The models were made more luxurious and stylized. The sixth version brought with it a radical shift in design and changed the car’s image entirely. Advanced safety measures were made available and eco friendly aspects were introduced. The seventh incarnation came in 2000 and it marked a drastic departure in styling and performance.

The contributions of Celica TRD have kept the Celica in demand for decades. However, people’s tastes change with time. As a result, the Celica fell out of favor in the years succeeding 2000 and the company decided to discontinue its production in 2005 along with the MR2.
