When I created my first website I had a number of problems to overcome - the greatest being getting visitors to come to my website. Unlike me you probably don\\\'t want to spend hours researching the best ways to advertise when you could find them all in one article. When it comes to promoting a website, there are so many different but equally important means by which to do so. In this article I will try to highlight what I have found to be the most sucessful ways.

1. Search Engines
This is very much a given, but the first thing you need to do when you launch a website is add it to the popular search engines like Google and Yahoo. Once you are listed on these you can be found by almost anyone in the world. The way I went about this was to manually submit to all the search engines and wait patiently for my site to be listed. Most of all, dn\\\'t panic when the week ends and your site remains unlisted.

2. Directories & Classified Ads
You have a choice when it comes to directories depending on your aim, your budget and your time. If you like me and have no budget, you can submit your site to almost every directory with a reciprocal link. Although this takes along time, seeing your site appearing on a new directory every day is very rewarding. Directories are often scruntinized because Google often doesn\\\'t take into account the links from some of the minor directories when ranking your site. I however feel that every link you get is can only be a good thing and even if it only generates one visitor, that\\\'s one potential customer.

3. Viral
Viral marketting is more often than not dismissed by website owners as they misunderstand the term to simply meaning \\\'telling your firends and family\\\'. However viral marketting can be one of the greatest things you ever did for your website. Unlike all the \\\'free hits\\\' websites that offer to get you 100 hits every day, the visitors through viral marketting are actual potential customers.
The best methods of viral marketting in my experience are; Email Signatures, Website related forum posts and Social networking groups. Through Facebook for example, your website could be advertised amongst a group of people who are simply browsing the internet more often than not slightly bored!

4. What else can I do?
On saturating the above (I would be impressed if you could!), you may be thinking, \\\"what now?\\\". This is exactly my state of mind 2 weeks ago. What now is completely down to your imagination. Here are some ideas which you might want to take on board:
Article Writting
Link Exchanging - (Google now cancel out reciprocal links on ranking your site)
Promotional Video - the amount of people who browse YouTube looking for something interesting is huge, so give them something to watch.
Press Release - If you feel your website has something new to offer write a press release and submit it to magazines.

Remember there are thousands of ways to promote your website, so if you use your imagination you can make any website a sucess.
